KORN's FIELDY: My First Little Taste Of Jesus
November 15, 2014KORN bassist Reginald "Fieldy" Arvizu talked about his faith during an appearance at an outreach entitled "Shine" on September 25 at Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa in California. You can watch video footage of the discussion below.
Asked what led him to follow Jesus, Fieldy responded: "Well, honestly, when I just got a little taste of Jesus, it was amazing. That's first off.
"It came to a point of my dad being on his death bed, and being in KORN, being successful, there was a lot of power in that. So I ran with a lot of power and money and pride. And I was able to fix anything with that — everything worked. And that's what I ran with.
"My dad, he was getting sicker and sicker, and I was, like, 'I'll just get a better doctor. Move him to L.A.' I wasn't even tripping that he was gonna die. I was, like, 'I'm gonna fix him.' I've got all the money that I needed. We sold millions and millions of records. And I moved him over, and he was getting sicker. And I still wasn't tripping; I was, like, 'I'll get the specialist. I'll bring him from Philly. I'll do this.' It was, like, my pride and my money and power. And then he got sicker and sicker, and they moved him to ICU. I didn't even know what ICU was; I never even dealt with any of this. I thought that was a new hip-hop band or something.
"So he got in there, and then all of sudden they had that thing that beeps [a heart beat monitor], and then it went flatline. And I was, like, 'What's going on?' And they came in with those things [defibrillator heart machine] and put them on the chest. And I was all just tripping. My sister Mandy was there and a couple of our loved ones and his wife. And they were all, 'You guys gotta go in the other room.' And I knew that that was it. And so we went in that room. And I was so hard hearted because power and pride… that was almost pretty much my god. And I went into the other room and my sister was crying, everybody was crying, but I wasn't crying, 'cause I didn't have those emotions, 'cause I was so hard hearted that I was, like, just dry heaving in the sink — I couldn't get anything out; I couldn't even throw up. And then after I kind of chilled out and I could get a breath, his wife was, like, 'Hey, will you do a prayer with me?' And I was in a vulnerable place, and tragedy, I'd never really felt anything like that. And I was, like, 'Yeah, I'll pray with you.' And I did a prayer with her, and she asked me if would invite Jesus in my life, and I was, like, 'Yeah, sure.' And I did it, not meaning much of it. And after I did that, it was kind of weird. And then a couple of days went by, and I remember going home with my wife, Dena, and she [my dad's wife] came with us. We went upstairs to the top floor — we have a couple of stories in our house, like four [laughs] — and me and my wife Dena and her sister Christy and my dad's wife Mindy went to pray with us, and we did the prayer again, but I really listened to it this time. And what really hit me is she asked me to ask Jesus into my life and he forgives me for my sins — for all of my sins. And I went to bed with that much of it, and I was, like, 'All of my sins? All of 'em?' And I was, like, 'Woah!' And it just lifted this burden off me. And when I accepted the Holy Spirit into my life, it was, like… It's, like, only He can come in and there's like a 'reset' button in there and he reset it and gave me a clean slate. And I was blown away, laying in bed, going, 'No way!' So I got that little taste of Jesus — just that. That was it."
Fieldy's 2009 memoir, "Got The Life: My Journey Of Addiction, Faith, Recovery And Korn", details his struggles with drug and alcohol addiction during KORN's early years and how he became a born-again Christian to help get his life together and get sober.
KORN guitarist Brian "Head" Welch left the band in 2005 after he converted to Christianity and got off drugs. He rejoined them for a handful of live performances in 2012 before officially becoming part of the lineup again in early 2013.
